Cape Town is regarded as one of the top holiday destinations in the world and is situated at the southern tip of the African continent in South Africa’s Western Cape. Table Mountain stands watch over the sprawling city bowl and many of the residential homes in the region boast stunning mountain views. The Southern Suburbs are the oldest and most sought after of the city’s established residential areas and there is an interesting mix of properties on the market, from the more upmarket houses to the more affordable flats and apartments.

Claremont is the commercial heart of Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs and houses a number of businesses and the popular Cavendish Shopping Centre. Nearby Rondebosch is home to the world-renowned University of Cape Town and many of the surrounding residential areas are home to students and academics. The further you move away from the city, the more reasonably priced the property becomes. The residential areas in Lakeside, Muizenberg and Marina da Gama are increasingly popular, especially with young professionals and families beginning to climb the property ladder.
Lakeside lies between the residential suburbs of West Lake and Muizenberg on the M3, with the rugged Steenberg Mountain serving as a backdrop and Zandvlei Lake in the foreground. There is a range of property available in all tiers of the market, with the more luxury homes located along Bunker and Leicester Roads, boasting stunning sea and mountain views. The lake itself offers a variety of activities, including yachting, windsurfing and canoeing. There are also a number of beaches nearby, with Boulders being home to one of Africa’s only land-based penguin colonies.

Muizenberg is an intriguing coastal area in Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs that boasts a colourful combination of history, architecture and culture. Not to mention the superb beach that stretches for miles and is a firm favourite with the surfing community. The steep cliffs that form a backdrop to the area offer excellent rock climbing opportunities and there is a coastal walk from here to nearby Kalk Bay, where residents and visitors can wander past historical properties and take in panoramic ocean views. There is a vibrant theatre life that takes place here, as well as a myriad of colourful homes, organic shops and restaurants.
Marina da Gama is situated on the eastern banks of the Zandvlei Lake and is reminiscent of a quaint Greek village with its white homes and sunny days. First established in the 1970s, this residential area is close to the beaches in False Bay and lies in the shadow of the Muizenberg Mountain. The marina development is a popular investment option and the waterways give the area a Venice-like feel, with neighbours visiting each other by boat. The shopping centres across the road mean that this particular Cape Town suburb is relatively self-sufficient.
